[Editorial] My Top 10 Best Movies Of 2017

I have been taking a bit of time in this month of January to catch some of the buzz-heavy movies that were out at the end of 2017 in order to make this list more complete.

Granted, there are still a few more that I have yet to catch, like Darkest Hour and The Shape Of Water

Before we get down to the official list, here are some of the honourable mentions that I wished I could have fit into the top 10 but they were just missing some elements of having some lasting impact and being memorable, and so they did not quite make the cut.

John Wick 2 (8.5/10)
The rare time where the sequel was better than the first one, but strangely not as memorable.

Thor: Ragnarok (7.5/10)
The fun factor of this installment was undeniable.

Split (8/10)
James McAvoy delivered one of his best performances, in a horror no less.

Gifted (8.5/10)
McKenna Grace was a revelation in this movie as she out-acted Chris Evans and Octavia Spencer.

Logan Lucky (8/10)
Steven Soderbergh back in great form as he paced this movie to being fun and funny throughout and with a great cast as well.

Wonder Woman (8/10)
That "No Man's Land" sequence was almost enough to land this in the Top 10 list, and Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins really understand what they are doing with this property with representing the voices of women all over the world.

And here is my Top 10 for 2017:

10) Call Me By Your Name (8/10)
Set in a small and quaint little town of Italy, a beautiful romance took place that left such a mark with its characters as well as its audience.

9) A Ghost Story (8.5/10)
A visionary director, David Lowery shot this in such an artistic and creative way and by the end of it, it was as if the character of the ghost was holding his breath right until that very scene at the end where he just gave out a sigh of relief.

8) Coco (8.5/10)
Another one of Pixar's finest delivery, taking on the Mexican culture and giving it a very heartfelt and original story that will surely pull at anyone's heartstrings by the end of it.

7) Blade Runner 2049 (8.5/10)
Dennis Villeneuve did such a fine job at bringing back a classic and making it relevant. This was beautifully shot and the story was paced just right, ending on a very memorable and claustrophobic fight.

6) Logan (8.5/10)
James Mangold and Hugh Jackman took one of the most popular comic book characters and gave it a risky spin. One of the best send-offs in comic book movie history.

5) Wind River (8.5/10)
Taylor Sheridan should be getting very busy after this movie, which in my opinion did not get enough recognition for what it was. That last 30 minutes was the most intense of the year.

4) The Shape Of Water (8.5/10)
Arguably Guillermo del Toro's best work in directing and writing, and this type of fantasy movie was the perfect representation of what he is best at. A very complete and beautiful story with a brilliant cast.

3) I, Tonya (9/10)
One of the best adaptations and biography of the year from Craig Gillespie, with very humorous dialogues and fantastic acting.

2) IT (9/10)
Never has there been a horror movie that was as memorable as the haunting of Pennywise brought to the silver screens by Andy Muschietti, mixing thriller and suspense with the backdrop of the 80's and New Kids On The Block.

1) Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (9/10)
Right from the first scene, Martin McDonaugh gave the audience a clear and obvious reason to get behind Frances McDormand's character. The writing and directing of the entire movie was just first class.
