[Review] Downsizing (7/10)
What we did not get to see in many of the trailers for Downsizing was the second half, which arguably could be more interesting than the first half.
The first half was largely witnessed in all trailers, about the need to go through the process of "downsizing".
The chemistry between Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig were great, and in that one scene with the phone call between the two, that was reason enough to get Wiig to play this character.
Another character that we did not get to see in trailers was Christoph Waltz. And Waltz must have had a ball while filming because he was so much fun to be around. His infectious smile and carefree personality was what the movie really needed.
Some of the humorous beats of the movie was constructed perfectly by director Alexander Payne. The laugh-out-loud moments were few but they were great.
There was also a political undertone that may not have felt like an undertone in the second half, which was where Damon's character went through a soul searching process. But the onscreen chemistry between him and Hong Chau was not believable enough as there wasn't enough screentime and development for me to believe them.
And also most of the characters that were introduced in the first half including Wiig, as well as Jason Sudeikis, were never seen again in the second half. You would have thought that with how Wiig has left Damon to shrink on his own, he would have spent more time with his friend Sudeikis. But Sudeikis was only there for a couple of scenes but were all important ones.
But this whole concept of "downsizing" certainly had its merits and can be argued for and against. It can get a conversation going because the ending has opened up a lot of questions that are up for discussion.
