[Review] T2 Trainspotting (7.5/10)

Danny Boyle is back with one of his biggest hits of the 90's, the sequel to Trainspotting; with a T2 in the title to confuse with Terminator 2. Trainspotting 2 would have suffice.

As a sequel, I feel that one has to have watched the original that was released back in 1996 in order to properly enjoy this movie. Just like Blade Runner.

One has to know the characters portrayed by Ewan McGregor, Johnny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle; well before sitting down for T2. Otherwise it will be hard to understand what is going on once the movie started.

McGregor in the role that made him well-known that many years ago, did not really jump straight back into the role for me. He is already McGregor to begin with, so he did not immediately look like Renton without the skin-head. But after a while, he did grow on me.

As for the rest of the cast who were less well-known in terms of McGregor's celebrity status, had less trouble becoming their characters for me - especially Bremner as Spud and Carlyle as Begbie. I have also seen Miller too many times already and not enough of Trainspotting to immediately associate him with his character Sick Boy.

But as a sequel, this was a really good movie to bring audiences back into this universe; to have another adventure - or more like another section int he lives of - with these few friends. The story tied back into the original well and had an interesting arc to follow as well.

That karaoke scene with McGregor and Miller was the standout for me. Boyle even managed to sneak in a couple of scenes with Kelly Macdonald.

I believe Boyle covered all his bases with this sequel, not to say tying up loose ends from the first one as there was none; but visiting these characters once again and then giving them another proper story with an ending.

Will there be another one, I'm inclined to not close that door unless Boyle and McGregor do not want to do it anymore. But it probably won't be anytime soon.
