[Editorial] Star Wars Confirms Writers For Another New Series, But For When?

Lucasfilm has confirmed today that they have a new duo of writers that will write and produce a new series of Star Wars movies outside of the existing trilogy as well as Rian Johnson's new trilogy, according to ComingSoon.

HBO hit series "Game Of Thrones" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been appointed to create a new series for the big screen. However, they will only start their new job once "Game Of Thrones" finishes, which the eighth and final season will be out in 2019.

But the question now is when will this new series come to light. The final movie for this current trilogy will be out in 2019, 2020 will be another Star Wars Story. Rian Johnson's trilogy will likely begin in 2021. Now assuming the Star Wars Story format continues with the one-shot storyline, they will fill in in between Johnson's trilogy. Which would mean the new series will only be out in 2027. That is a long time to wait.

So, instead, I will guess that the Star Wars Story may end with the 2020 movie and then this new series will fill in in between Johnson's trilogy.

Unless (now I hope this is not the case because Lucasfilm should not) Johnson's trilogy is either delayed or canceled due to the divisive nature of the hardcore fans. Johnson was hired to do a new trilogy right before The Last Jedi was out. Then the backlash happened. So it is plausible that Kathleen Kennedy wants to distant the new movies from Johnson's hand prints.

But I want to believe Lucasfilm is not Warner Bros. Pictures with its DC properties, which is very reactionary still. I want to believe Lucasfilm has a plan and structure and is strong enough to stick with their guns, not letting the audience (this time) dictate their creativity department.

Let's give it a few more days and see what the rest of the movie world thinks.
