[Review] The Beguiled (5.5/10)

Sofia Coppola managed to assemble quite a cast here with The Beguiled.

With heavy hitters like Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell, supported by Kirsten Dunst, and the up-and-comer Elle Fanning; it was unfortunate that this movie did not do better.

The setup and buildup have been adequate, creating that mystery and the fragility of the whole situation for both parties - the man and the ladies.

But perhaps the first half took a bit too long to get to the more interesting plot point which we saw in the trailer what was to become the fate of Farrell's character.

And the way it got to that point, where he was screaming on the bed; I could not get behind his decisions which caused so much confusion inside the house.

Perhaps this was Coppola's exploration into the inner workings of the minds of both sexes, the little evil that lives inside the human subconscious. But I was hoping for something more sinister and unexpected than the simplistic nature of it all.

Still, there were great performances as expected from this caliber of cast; and Coppola's direction did not disappoint as well. Just that the payoff was not as satisfied as initially hoped.
