[Review] Game Night (8/10)
Now this is a real surprise. Game Night was actually very good. It's a surprise because it was directed by the duo that butchered their previous movie Vacation.
Instead, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein's direction was what made Game Night such a pleasure to watch.
I was laughing from beginning until the end, and not many comedies can do that these days. And the editing and pacing helped keep the plot points moving without slowing down at all.
The assembled cast here worked brilliantly. Jason Bateman and Kyle Chandler had great chemistry and their back and forth, together with Rachel McAdams, was one of the best parts.
Billy Magnussen was a complete surprise. Under the direction of Daley and Goldstein, he was never as memorable in anything else as he was here. His inflections, his airheadedness, and sometimes the confused look on his face was enough to make me laugh out loud.
Lamorne Morris and Kylie Bunbury also had great chemistry as they played up the jealousy factor.
But the highlight here was definitely Jesse Plemons who kept stealing scenes. Every time he's creeping around, his performance added so much to the scene. And at times he slid the comedic scene into a semi-horror one and it was done with so much subtlety. Plemons is becoming someone I am always looking forward to watch.
The only part which I very slightly disliked was one plot point towards the end that the script by Mark Perez decided to add in a small twist which I found completely unnecessary and took away the fun a little bit.
But other than that, this was such a fun and delightful comedy that I would not mind watching again sometime in the near future.
