[Editorial] Avengers 3 Crossed $1B In Record Time, No Trailers Needed For Avengers 4?
It only took Avengers: Infinity War less than two weeks to make USD 1 billion worldwide - 11 days to be exact. The previous record holder was another Walt Disney Pictures alum, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and that was 12 days back in 2015.
This marks Disney's 17th film to cross the 1 billion mark, with only 34 movies that have achieved this feat in cinema history. Marvel Studios itself has done it six times now, with the seventh surely on the way - the yet-untitled Avengers 4.
And with the way Infinity War ended, I have to wonder how can Marvel market that movie without giving away any spoilers. Even when they have successfully done so with every single trailer they have released thus far for all their movies, but Infinity War ended very...uniquely and has never been done before for other properties.
That got me wondering, since Infinity War has made history, does its sequel really need any type of marketing? Especially for its trailers which can only show the superheroes that are left behind. Or can they even show what Thanos has been up to? I feel that would still be a major spoiler for its plot.
How about doing away with trailers for Avengers 4? With the success of Avengers 3, everyone who has seen it will definitely want to see the next one. There is no need for marketing and in that way, all of us fans will be able to walk into the movie without having seen any footage at all - and this will be another first in cinema history.
I will say posters are allowed. As no footage can be gleamed from a still artwork. A featurette, sure. Just something promotional campaign to announce the date of release, but stay away from actual footage from the movie.
How about it, Marvel? Let's make it interesting.
