[Review] Deadpool 2 (8.5/10) (SPOILER WARNING)

Whenever there is a time-travelling element introduced to a story, it gets really tricky. If this wasn't Deadpool 2, it would have been a harder sell.

So the beauty of the opening sequence was immediately killing off Vanessa, which when I watched it the first time I was left a little stunned going into the opening credits. And with Celine Dion singing "Ashes", it suited the atmosphere so well. This was one of those times I wished they had left a key character dead because it was the motivation behind the whole movie (other than being about family).

What's so great about this sequel was that they up the ante when it came to the jokes and the absurdity of it all. There wasn't a flat joke at all and I loved every one of them. There were also a lot of references to the MCU as well as the DC Universe. Plus a couple of Star Wars. And there was one deep one to the Deadpool creator Robert Liefeld.

Then there was the introduction to the idea of X-Force with the formation of a team through LinkedIn. We got a few great characters other than Domino but they all got killed immediately even before the mission started. The whole thing was so unnecessary and that made it even more hilarious. But then again, one of them was Shatterstar - a prominent and complex character from the comic books; so I don't know if we will see him appear again in the X-Force movie.

But the best character was definitely Domino. The way they introduced her and the way they showed how her mutant ability of being lucky works, was perfect. Not to mention Zazie Beetz played her so well, she was the best thing about this movie.

As for Josh Brolin's Cable, I thought there was just not enough layers to him. There was a brief shot of him looking at his own reflection, but that amounted to nothing. There was just not enough of screentime for the character and that was already an uphill battle - what with Thanos being in the spotlight of Avengers: Infinity War.

Colossus this time had more screentime and more to do with the overall character arc of Deadpool, but the trade off was Negasonic Teenage Warhead having much less personality.

The movie also introduced Black Tom Cassidy, another major villain in the X-Universe, but then he got killed off without having done anything too. In the source material, he became a major problem for the X-Men so it was a shame to get this version of Black Tom.

And the build-up to Juggernaut appearing was fantastic. I literally gave out a cry when I saw his helmet coming out of the box.

I can't say the action sequences this time were better because the final fight was more of Colossus versus Juggernaut, while Deadpool and Cable only took out goons. Domino, though, stole the action sequences in her own battle.

But overall, I laughed more than I could remember in one sitting and that says a lot. And I'll say it again, that mid-credit scene was the best of all time!

  2. Just watched it and your review pretty much sums up how I feel. The post credit sequences were fun and very knowing. I know I’ll watch it again but perhaps not as much as DP1.m4ufree And popcornflix
