[Review] A Most Violent Year (9/10)
How this movie did not get any recognition at the Academy Awards is beyond me. A Most Violent Year is easily one of the best of that year with the best performance from Oscar Isaac in his career.
J.C. Chandor has done wonders with this film. In terms of screenplay and direction, there was nothing I would change. The visual tone somehow grabbed my attention once the movie began with Isaac's character just jogging in a gloomy atmosphere, and that carried on for the rest of the movie.
What was so great was to see Isaac's character staying true to what he believed in, his principles kept his character so interesting to watch.
Jessica Chastain played a strong female lead, with her protective nature coming into play more than once. And also a great supporting effort from David Oyelowo.
The struggles presented in this story did not feel forced as they felt realistic, and that was why as an audience it was easy to empathize and relate. And there wasn't a scene that did not serve a purpose.
The best scenes were the emotional ones with Chastain and Isaac giving their best.
I would track down what Chandor has done to see if his previous work were as great as this.
