I had to look it up. This is how long it took this movie to get made because the last time Val Kilmer was offered to reprise his role in Top Gun 2 was back in November of 2015.
Now that filming has begun, The Wrap has confirmed that Kilmer will indeed be back as Iceman. It will be interesting to see how big of a role he will have, or will he even be back inside a fighter plane at all.
Currently, the sequel is without an official title. Apparently, Top Gun: Maverick is no longer it.
