[Review] Triple 9 (5/10)
Title - Triple 9
Studio - Open Road Films
Starring - Chiwetel Ejiofor, Casey Affleck, Aaron Paul, Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson, Gal Gadot, Kate Winslet, Norman Reedus, Clifton Collins Jr.
Writer - Matt Cook
Director - John Hillcoat
Release - 26 February 2016
This movie had the makings of an epic dirty cop movie. Just look at this crazy cast, it was filled with talents. But somehow, John Hillcoat just could not create a compelling movie.
From beginning to end, there was nothing that gripped the viewer. A lot of scenes setup that had a lot of potential to be more impactful but Hillcoat never could stick the landing.
And then there were the scenes with Ejiofor and Winslet that always felt a bit weird and out of sorts. It was never clear how they ended up in that kind of a relationship so we have to kind of figure it out as the story moved along, and the effect was probably opposite of what Hillcoat intended.
Still, each of the cast member gave their best for the movie. Winslet was almost unrecognizable. Ejiofor, Affleck, Mackie were all very convincing. And even Harrelson who could have given a throwaway performance here but added something special to make him memorable.
