[Editorial] James Wan No Longer Directing The Conjuring 3
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that James Wan - director of The Conjuring movies - has decided to step down as director for the third installment.
Michael Chaves, who just directed The Curse Of The La Llorona - which Wan produced - is stepping in to fill some very big shoes.
The Conjuring is my, and many others', favourite horror franchise. Personally, it is because of Wan's direction and storytelling that kept me captivated throughout the entirety of those first two movies.
Wan has been making known that he wants to move on to other genres, and I have written a little about it back in January of 2016.
In this case, I am speculating that because Aquaman is set to be a big hit in the eyes of the studio that they are letting him off of The Conjuring 3 project so that he can venture into something new and fresh. Or perhaps even another superhero movie in the DC universe.
Aquaman has not been released and has not been seen by anyone else outside the studio, no one can say if this movie will sink or swim. If it is a success, then full sails ahead. But what if it tanks? Because so far the trailers have honestly not been great. Will the big corporation that is WB force him to go back to horror?
Was Furious 7 a fluke? This is still a legitimate question at this point in time because that is the only action movie he has ever directed, and the only one that isn't horror in recent years. The movie was a huge success because it has an built-in fandom and because of Paul Walker's death. But credit goes where credit is due, and Wan pulled that off like a magician. It is definitely my favourite Furious movie.
In any case, I would like to see him tackle something smaller next, just to go back to his roots a little (Saw) and see how creative he can become with something original.
