[Review] A Simple Favor (6.5/10)
Title - A Simple Favor
Studio - Lionsgate
Starring - Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, Henry Golding, Linda Cardellini, Rupert Friend, Jean Smart
Writer - Jessica Sharzer
Director - Paul Feig
Release - 14 September 2018
While the posters and trailers have always been a mystery as to what kind of tone the actual movie would have, the film never really lived up to its marketing potential.
Paul Feig seemed to have a continuous dilemma with whether the movie is a thriller or a comedy, and the combination of both sometimes make the comedy a little jarring.
While both Kendrick and Lively played their characters perfectly (even Henry Golding had a much better performance here than he ever had in Crazy Rich Asians), it has always been the tone of wanting to be a mystery-thriller vibe that threw me off.
He has two very competent actresses to work with here and it may have served the movie better had the comedy and thriller swapped sides on their percentages.
The story itself, since it was based from a novel, was quite good. Just the execution, especially in the third act, was a major let down.
Also, does Feig need to keep dressing up Lively's character in the most lavish and oustanding clothing? Even when she was supposed to hide away from the public, who would put on a full white suit with nothing inside but a big, white bow tie to cover up some modesty while she visited a cemetary?
