[Review] Robin Hood (4/10)

Release - 21 November 2018

This is one of those movies that it starts off with a promise, dips in the middle, and continued to disappoint in the end.

It started off with some nice action sequences but with an illogical plot point that I was willing to overlook. Robin Loxley risked everything to save a friend, to a point of blindingly sacrificed even more of his friends who appeared only as fodder.

I didn't mind Jamie Foxx's John, or how the friendship was made. It was actually one of the more interesting plot points in the movie.

And Ben Mendelsohn's Sheriff of Nottingham was actually the best acted character of them all. Mendelsohn is now my go-to villain (Ready Player One and Rogue One) after Christoph Waltz appeared to be it for a couple of years. But we all know how Waltz turned out with Spectre. Let's hope Mendelsohn will have a better run.

There was also one major character flaw, when he finally brought Egerton to the "big table" and just revealed his traitorous plan to betray England, there was never any indication that Robin Loxley would agree to that! That whole scene played out very shockingly.

Eve Hweson did not shine at all, and Jamie Dornan's Will have one of the worst story arcs this year.

Also, the CGI in this was horrible. It was so bad that director Otto Bathurst had to edit around them. Anything to do with explosions in the background had less than a second of screen time.

Then again, the studio did not bother much with the dialogue. You know they are bad when almost every scene with dialogue is less than 15 seconds long and then it is quickly followed with a cut to another scene.

The end fight was very underwhelming. If you thought there wasn't enough budget spent on CGI and dialogue, there were even less with sword fights!

This was a badly conceived project that should not have boasted the kind of talent that it got.
