[Editorial] 5 Reasons Why Avengers 4 Should Not Release Any Trailers

If there ever was a time or a movie in Hollywood that does not require a trailer to market itself, Avengers 4 is it.

And because of that, should a trailer drops, I am going to try my darndest to not see it as a whole (visiting Instagram everyday will ensure I have glimpses of it at the very least). If at all possible, I would like to go into the movie without having witnessed prior footage of it.

There has been rumours about the first trailer's release date (much like its heavily speculated official title). It was supposed to be last week, then it was supposed to be yesterday - obviously it didn't happen; then another rumour points to this Friday. Nobody knows for sure, and if anyone tells you otherwise, they are lying.

If anything, Marvel Studios should take a page from Mark Hamill's social media accounts where he trolls fans constantly, warranted or not. And because no one in this world would get to a point of boycotting Avengers 4, the studio can do (literally) whatever they want - without crossing any moral lines of course. Which means, now is a great opportunity to troll the fans - I would prefer they do it with class like Hamill, or it could even be a really fun marketing tactic a la Deadpool.

So here are my 5 reasons why Marvel does not need to market this movie. (Not to mention the millions the studio can save on marketing, which means even more profit and year end bonuses!)

1) Avengers 4 is the biggest sequel of our lifetime [so far (?)]

Marvel Studios has built up the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the last 10 years, giving us characters to love and really care for their future; culminating in Avengers 4 while at the same time keeping its quality and standards consistent for the most part.

What's so unique about this universe is that Marvel's head honcho Kevin Feige has created franchises that, even if they were titles and characters taken from comic books, they still stand very originally and separately on their own as stories that exist only in the silver screen.

Avengers 4 is not a case of Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King or Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The ending to those movies still resembles their source material. The MCU is at best loosely adapted from their comic book origins, and hence will have an ending - and character deaths in this case - that we would want to see for ourselves once the movie comes out.

So even if you don't frequent the cinemas, even if you have never read a comic book before, even if you have never seen a Marvel movie before; you would have definitely heard something about Avengers: Infinity War.

Which then brings me to my next point.

2) Infinity War is the trailer to Avengers 4

You can't watch Avengers 4 without watching Infinity War. If you are going to convince anyone who has never seen a Marvel movie to go watch Avengers 4, you definitely have to show them Infinity War. Heck, you would show them everything from Iron Man to Ant-Man And The Wasp, as well as the upcoming Captain Marvel.

But for this argument's sake, Infinity War is a must. Going into Avengers 4 cold is like... well, being pushed into the freezing water of the Arctic from an opening in the icy ground. I.e. there is no reason for it.

So if you want to get hyped up for Avengers 4, just go back to Infinity War.

3) No one is sitting on the fence.

Anyone and everyone on earth who is going to watch this movie, is already going to watch this movie. There is nothing the studio can do at this point to convince a new customer to enter the cinema and purchase a ticket for this movie just because of its trailers.

If you came out of Infinity War hating it and swore to not watch the sequel, an Avengers 4 trailer is not going to change your mind. Your friends will. Not the trailer.

4) Spoilers

There is nothing a trailer can show us that would not spoil the plot point of the movie. Infinity War has built up such a dramatic ending where half of the heroes have disappeared, leaving the other half to mourn for them and pick up the pieces, and ultimately device a plan to bring them back while defeating Thanos in the process.

That is essentially all we need to know going into this sequel.

Anything the trailer is going to show us will ruin the mystery, will spoil which dead superhero is coming back, and spoil the surprise of finding out who they are.

When was the last time you went into a movie without knowing what the movie was about? If there ever was a movie that you can prepare yourself to go in fresh, Avengers 4 is it! Marvel Studios should keep this magical experience for everyone. If there ever was a movie that they could do it, Avengers 4 is it!

5) In Marvel we trust

Marvel Studios has been doing this for more than 10 years, with at least two or three movies almost every year since they started in 2008. The only way it was able to keep doing this was because of the fans. Us.

And the only reason why we are still here is because we keep getting great pieces of entertainment that not only bring our imagination to life on the silver screen, but creating a world that we can be a part of as a community. From the geeks to the casual movie goers, we share a bond that gives us a common ground where we can share our love for these movies. We talk, we interact, we debate, we laugh. We are more than because of the MCU.

Marvel Studios takes care of us. And as they are bringing us the biggest movie of our lifetime, why not continue to trust them right up until we walk into the cinema. Let us be blindfolded as they guide us to our seats. Let them be the ones to remove our blindfolds just as the Marvel Studios production logo appear. Let them show us their vision the way they intended us to see it.

Because whether we have seen a trailer or not, at that point, nothing else matters. Once that first frame of storytelling begins, the ending to this 10-year journey is set in motion; opening up to a brand new chapter in its wake. And I will be thanking my lucky stars that I am able to live in this moment.

Thank you, Marvel. Excelsior!
