Spike Lee is back in good form with this new movie. And John David Washington definitely has his father's genes.
Lee's pacing from start to finish was actually very consistent. Right from the beginning, following Washington's character, Lee just ushered the audience in and has our full attention. There were great characters and great dialogue, and ultimately a great cast.
This was also a much better performance by Laura Harrier as compared to Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The downside here, however, was also in the writing. Some parts of the plot point were not very clear, most notably in police chief's decision to send in Washington to protect Topher Grace's character. That part made no sense because everyone knew it was the worst decision and there was no real or good reason to do so.
And if I were to nitpick, there was actually no reason for Washington to keep talking on the phone when Adam Driver could have done it as well since he was the one going undercover.
But Lee's humour made some of the best parts of the movie. The locker scene with Washington, Driver and Buscemi was just the best. The absurdity also was a main selling point, aside from the political and racial issues which already made the whole story very interesting.
This movie definitely stands out for this year and will be memorable through the award season.
