[Review] Cop Car (7.5/10)
The horrible poster and tagline notwithstanding, Cop Car turned out to be quite good as I finally sat down to watch this movie that supposedly gave director Tom Watts the Spider-Man: Homecoming gig.
It feels like Watts was handpicked by Kevin Feige as Feige once said that Marvel Studios is really focusing on getting directors that can tell a story. And Cop Car was the perfect audition.
The way the story unfolded here had subtlety, suspense and style. It was a very simple story but it felt engaging.
However, I also had one complaint, which was Camryn Manheim's character appeared one too many times. It felt too coincidental and forced, but it was quite small a thing to matter too much.
The two kids, James Freedson-Jackson and Hays Wellford, were surprisingly good. And this was kudos to Watts for bringing out that innocence in them.
But what also surprised me the most was how much humour there was in this movie. Every time Kevin Bacon and Shea Whingham's characters started running, you can't help but feel the silliness of it all.
I also really liked the way the movie ended with an open ending. Whether they made it or not, it really didn't matter; because this was a very good example of, "it's the journey, not the destination".
