This was a good showcase of what Lakeith Standfield can do. He carried the movie and was almost never not onscreen, something which I thought director Boots Riley did very well in his storytelling.

The first act was really fun, to hear David Cross' voice out of Stanfield, but I just wished Riley could have recorded Cross reading the script first, and then have Stanfield followed with acting out the mouthing of the words. However, if it was done in this sequence (which I don't believe so), then not enough direction was given to Stanfield to make those scenes more believable.

Armie Hammer was a great addition with a great role. His scenes with Stanfield in his mansion was a highlight. But right after that was when things got very unexpectedly weird - unexpected as in I still cannot decide whether it was bad weird or just weird, but definitely not good weird. It's definitely in the same ballpark as Kevin Smith's Tusk, though I thought it ended much better than Tusk.

Also, the editing for the first half of this movie seemed to be done by a separate person or team as the second half. Even in the first half it seemed to have different editors at work, and looked very inconsistent and amateurish.

As opposed to my last review with Bird Box, which I said deserved to be on the silver screen. This one, was quite the opposite judging by the quality of the overall picture.

Still, a very interesting story by Boots Riley as his feature debut and congratulations that Annapurna picked it up to distribute. But ultimately, just a little too weird for me. Had it been a straight comedy, however, it may have played better as an indie type of comedic movie.

Give me the movie that your trailer sold me.
