I realized that for Steve Carell, even though this was a dramatic performance, I still saw Carell in the role. He needs to go off in a big tangent like in Foxcatcher in order for me to forget that is Carell.
And most of the scenes followed Carell's character, he was seldom onscreen. And I didn't think he did enough to convince me as he still sounded like his character in The Office, whiny but dramatic instead of comedic.
Fortunately, Timothee Chalamet was wonderfully amazing. Like the trailer advertised, that scene in the cafe when it was just him and Carell, his acting was easily at another level. Even his eyes told stories of where he has been and where he came from. It was such a brilliant, yet uncomfortable, scene to witness.
The middle part of the movie I thought was a little too long. At one point I thought that the movie was winding down towards the ending. But it was only the end of the second act.
Which meant more heartaches to come, as with each relapse it was just heartbreaking to watch his actions. And yet, crazy thing was, you believed in his struggle and you believed in his desire for the drugs. That's what made this movie so engaging.
I'm just amazed by the talent in this young man, and I will definitely follow his career path.
