Here's what I can tell from this very decent trailer. The team goes into space for assistance, and Jean Grey turns into Dark Phoenix (exactly like the source material). Somehow Jean then goes back home and the X-Men tries to get her back. That's when she kills Mystique, because at the funeral we see a shot of Hank McCoy's frustration.

Unless they are pulling a classic MCU misdirect, which I don't feel like they would bother with this one.

What I am hoping for is that Simon Kinberg can wrap this up with a bow so that at least there is a conclusion to the current saga that started back in 2000. Once the property gets into the MCU, even though I would prefer this cast continues forward, I believe they will be rebooted.
