[Review] The Favourite (7.5/10)

Title - The Favourite
Studio - Fox Searchlight Pictures
Starring - Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Coleman, Nicholas Hoult, Mark Gatiss
Writer - Tony McNamara, Deborah Davis
Director - Yorgos Lanthimos
Release - 23 November 2018

I don't know how The Favourite did not win Set Design at the Oscars this year. The palace looked so beautiful and every room seemed to have been built in its entirety because cinematographer Robbie Ryan's shot and sequences were eye-popping.

Just when you thought only two wall sections were built to shoot a scene, Ryan panned the camera to show you, no, all four walls were there.

Olivia Coleman deserved her first Oscar win for Best Actress. This must be her performance of a lifetime, though I have seldom seen her work.

Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone both were also spectacular, as the three ladies created this movie and the story of jealousy and betrayal.

Nicholas Hoult's presence could not be ignored as well, as his over-the-top performance often created some of the best humorous moments.

As this was my first Yorgos Lanthimos' film, I have a feeling that his style of storytelling may not be something I would gravitate to. I found certain parts of the pacing could have moved faster, and there could have been something more for us to sink our teeth into in the final act.

But then again, when it came down to directing, this was a masterclass of a movie; with a subdued ending that felt like it was the only way it could have ended.
