Shazam! is more than just a breath of fresh air It is proof that DC and WB can get it right. It also proved that Green Lantern was an anomaly.
Credit goes to David F. Sandberg for really crafting such a fun and enjoyable and entertaining movie that not even the more superior James Wan could achieve. And if we look at both the Shazam! and Aquaman movies, they both exude fun and humour but the former had a more convincing storyline with more heart. The latter kind of waffled on both accounts.
One thing I would say about this movie, though, is that the originality of the story beat as a whole was not very original - but that is because Marvel had been doing this story and style for almost 20 years. And so, the story became predictable and, certain times, slowed down a lot.
Another minor issue I had was that Shazam and his alter ego Billy's personalities were slightly disconnected. You wouldn't have felt they were the same person exactly.
And also, Zachary Levi's shoulder padding were too unrealistic, so much so that whenever he raised his arms his shoulders looked really bad. Why didn't they just made a suit like Superman's? Levi's physique isn't that far off from Shazam, I suspect.
But for Levi's co-stars in Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer, the two youths really made their characters and their story arcs pop. Mark Strong was also a competent adversary in this movie, I really enjoyed his back story.
The ending fight was also great with a very surprising twist, which also led to more questions for me which I'm sure will be answered in the sequel. And that is a sign of a good setup for mire stories.
