I've been debating with myself whether this is a 6.5 or a 7 out of 10 movie because I really have a few problems with it, mainly because of the writing and the execution - which are two of the biggest contributing factors into making a movie.
The Good:
- I have to say that I teared up at one point, and that's because Jon Favreau's performance - a simple look on his face, that even Spider-Man had no idea what it was, but we do!
- The first few minutes of the movie was a stroke of genius. How do you follow up with Avengers: Endgame's ending? This was it!
- I found the relationships between Peter Parker and Nick Fury, as well as Peter and Happy Hogan, an interesting turn. While Tony Stark has always been that father figure, Fury's position while was for the overall good, but was also a very manipulative one.
- All the jokes worked very well. I laughed a lot.
- It was great to see Peter's classmates having more to do in this sequel. As well as his teacher played by Martin Starr who was perfect.
- All the human aspects, and the student life, these were all interesting. It was the superhero stuff that I found lacking, and that is crazy seeing as this was a Spider-Man movie.
- The best parts of the movie was the two credit scenes. But therein lies the problem.
- Jake Gyllenhaal's character was very interesting. But I called it way back when the first trailer was released on who he really was. Which leads me to:
The Bad:
- Once the reveal came about who Mysterio really was, I lost interest completely.
- The writing and and the directing when it was about Mysterio in action, from beginning until the very end, felt impossibly perfect in the execution of all his plans. Especially with that first showdown between him and Spider-Man, even with the tech, it just seemed too perfect.
- I feel Jake Gyllenhaal's foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a big waste.
- D.B. Smoove felt like an after-thought. If we removed his character, I really doubt we would be missing anything.
- M.J. and Peter's relationship advanced more this time around, but I really could not be bothered to see it grow. The best relationship we have ever seen onscreen was still in the Amazing Spider-Man franchise between Gwen Stacey and Peter.
Conclusion:
It was fun but I expected more as this was the MCU after all. The only thing that would make me watch this movie again is the mid credit scene.
