At about the mid way mark of the movie, sitting in the cinema, I turned to my friend and said, this is not a good movie.
The Good:
- Pennywise portrayed by Bill Skarsgard was again the highlight. This time we even got to see his face, but therein also was an issue.
- Every adult cast member, except McAvoy, Chastain and Mustafa, were so believably similar to their younger counterparts. They not only looked like the kids, but they nailed their mannerisms as well.
- That reunion scene at the Chinese restaurant, with their banter, was probably the best scene.
The Bad:
- I now have to believe that Chastain and McAvoy was cast for their star power. They looked nothing like Lillis or Lieberher. Not only that, they didn't even have the kids' shadow in their acting.
- The whole movie could have been at least 20 to 30 minutes shorter. That scene with McAvoy in the mirror maze was completely useless and had nothing to do with the story.
- There was the plot point of the adults getting their artifact, and that in itself took way too long. Too many unnecessary scare sequences. On top of that, it did not explain why Pennywise would hand over an artifact to one of them when he knew what they were going to do.
- I have never read the book but the way Pennywise was defeated in the end boiled down to, something this society today can do without: bullying.
In conclusion, the first movie was one of the best of that year because there was so much heart and soul. This one had neither. It became like too much of a good thing with its length and what it needed to tell.
