[Review] ROMA (7/10)

Title - ROMA
Studio - Netflix
Starring - Yalitza Aparicio, Nancy Garcia, Marina de Tavira
Writer - Alfonso Cuaron
Director - Alfonso Cuaron
Release - 4 December 2018

Finally got to watch this on Netflix. I think it is a little over rated.

The Good:

- Every shot, every scene, was beautifully crafted in its aesthetics. The black-and-white effect added so much more to the feel of it and I couldn't tear my eyes away from the screen.

- There was a good story in here that took too long to tell. But the story itself worked, with a nice closure at the end of it.

- The finale sequence had great tension and suspense, and I believe only practical effects were used, which half of it was mostly impressive camera work and camera angle.

The Bad:

- Because Cuaron focused on framing each scene, he took many liberties with the editing that I thought could have cut down and saved the run-time. The movie really did not need to be this long.

- The dialogue were quite minimum in the movie, and I'm not sure whether to laud Cuaron for conveying emotions through such a minimalist way, or that more emotions could have been evoked had the writing been beefed up more.

Alfonso Cuaron deserved the Best Director and Best Cinematographer awards, but I thought the Best Film slot could have given to someone else.
