[Review] Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (6.5/10)
Title - Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark
Studio - CBS Films, Lionsgate
Starring - Zoe Colletti, Austin Zajur, Austin Abrams, Gabriel Rush, Michael Garza, Dean Norris
Writer - Daniel Hageman, Kevin Hageman, Guillermo del Toro
Director - Andre Ovredal
Release - 9 August 2019
The saving grace was the last act which almost saved the movie because of the way the story was told.
The Good:
- The last act had tension and suspense that almost made the movie came together, until we go back and thought about the first two acts again...
- Zoe Colletti, Gabriel Rush and Austin Zajur had good rapport and was fun to watch.
The Bad:
- The writing wasn't great. Some of the dialogue were really trite and shallow.
- Michael Garza's acting was horrendous. A lot of times he did not match the emotions of his co-stars. He was very wooden and expressionless most of the times.
- We had no idea what the monsters came from, or what they represented, or why they looked the way they did. They tried to give the scarecrow a bit of a back story but it was half-baked at best.
- There wasn't much originality in the explanation of the motivation of the vengeful spirit, though Overdal's direction made it tolerable.
