[Review] The Farewell (9/10)
Title - The Farewell
Studio - A24
Starring - Awkwafina, Tzi Ma, Zhao Shu Zhen, Diana Lin
Writer - Lulu Wang
Director - Lulu Wang
Release - 12 July 2019
Glad to have finally caught this after all that buzz, and had a good cry.
The Good:
- Lulu Wang is definitely someone to look out for. Her pacing and storytelling was superb.
- Who would have thought, Awkwafina can pull off a dramatic performance like she was born to do it. I had my doubt right up until the middle of watching the movie and realizing that she just blended in so naturally.
- Zhao Shu Zhen as the ailing grandmother was the best thing about this movie. Her portrayal is every Chinese kid's grandmother, and she was flawless.
- There was also this great supporting cast, performing in a great premise about a good lie. And the subject matter will have you debating the morality of it all after the movie has ended.
The Bad:
- I would have liked for someone to touch on whether or not the "wedding cover" had the full consent of the bride and groom.
- With a wedding, I would have thought the bride's family would be more involved, but this I know is a nitpick that the movie can work without.
Learning that this was Wang's personal story after watching the movie was the icing on the cake.
