[Review] Gemini Man (5.5/10)

Writer - David Benioff, Billy Ray, Darren Lemke
Director - Ang Lee
Release - 11 October 2019
I have very mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, the trailers undersold the action sequences. But on the other, there wasn't much to this story.
Many have talked about how the script was never updated and it felt like more of a sci-fi movie from the 90's. It certainly did feel that way once you realize that the story was not going to go very far.
The Good:
- Will Smith was Will Smith. He made do with what he had to work with.
- Winstead and Wong were good supporting cast; with Winstead very convincingly doing action - I am looking forward to seeing her in the Harley Quinn movie.
- The afore-mentioned action sequences really surprised me at how good they were. Some shots looked silly in the trailers but given the context, they were really spectacular.
The Bad:
- The CGI version of the younger Smith looked odd, especially his upper lip movements. It kept reminding me of Henry Cavill in Justice League. The final scene where I suspect was just a full CGI character walking alongside Smith was terrible. I wished they hadn't done it that way.
- Poor Clive Owen keeps getting these meat-less, one-dimensional roles in feature films; even in an Ang Lee film.
This was not a good representation of an Ang Lee movie. I am baffled why he would want to do this in the first place. The drama was thin, the plot was old, and I don't think Lee brought anything new to this or challenged himself.
