[Review] The New Mutants (5/10)

Title - The New Mutants
Studio - 20th Century Studios
Starring - Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, Alice Braga
Writer - Josh Boone, Knate Lee
Director - Josh Boone
Release - 28 August 2020

This should have been a limited series instead of a movie. The way the script has set up these characters are primed for an episodic platform because this movie felt too rushed in terms of characterization, but slow in terms of pacing. You can see how this was an issue for it.

There were semi-episodic segments when Josh Boone was trying to introduce each character. It felt very immature and unimaginative. As for the interactions, that was where the episodic style of a series would have worked so much better because each episode could have introduced each character and also provide a background of where they came from - which the movie tried to squeeze in.

The cast did as best as they could with what's been handed to them. The main shining ones were Alice Braga and Anya Taylor-Joy, with the latter being the scene stealer because, one, her character was most interesting to follow in small doses, and two, Taylor-Joy looked like she had fun playing her. And probably, three, she's the best actor out of the whole bunch.

This was a cheap movie to make, what with the whole shoot being in one location for 95% of the story; but unfortunately it just didn't work well enough to make the money back. Coupled with the pandemic, the poor movie just couldn't catch a break.
