[Review] Spiderhead (6/10)

Title - Spiderhead
Production - Conde Nast Entertainment, Grand Electric, Reese Wernick Productions
Starring - Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, Jurnee Smollett, Mark Paguio, Tess Haubrich, Daniel Reader
Writer - Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick
Director - Joseph Kosinski
Release - 17 June 2022

Not the best thing to follow up after Top Gun: Maverick, but Joseph Kosinski did the best he could with Spiderhead.

Definitely not the best movie title to begin wtih, what with Spider-Man being as big as it is now, plus having the Thor actor in here might set off a bit of a wrong direction in audience expectation.

This definitely was more of a slow-burn thriller than anything exciting. The first half was way too slow, and surprisingly so coming from the duo that brought us the Deadpool and Zombieland movies. If this is them trying out a high-concept thriller, then so be it.

It wasn't terrible, not at all, once you get past the first act. Once the movie established itself, I found myself caring for the Miles Teller character. Teller, being the fine actor that he is, could make anything work.

I couldn't say the same for Chris Hemsworth, unfortunately. I thought his physique and good looks were detrimental and a distraction from the role, even though his delivery had no flaws. I just wished they could have picked a more seasoned actor that came with a more sinister undertone like a Gary Oldman or a Colin Firth even.

In the end, the story didn't leave too  much of an impression; but I didn't mind the entertainment value.
