I can see what writer and director Andrew Dominik was going for here, with this specific tone and pace and style; but it's very niche, and isn't for me.
For one, the movie was way too long - running close to 3 hours long. With its slow burn storytelling, and just how dark the character descended, never once finding happiness; it's not easy to sit through. (I don't think anyone would be going back for a second viewing.)
I haven't read the novel by Joyce Carol Oates which the movie was based on, so I can't tell whether some of the choices by Andrew Dominik was because he stayed faithful to it or it was all him. I didn't think this movie needed to be NC-17 to tell this tragic tale of how Hollywood destroyed Marilyn Monroe. I didn't think there needed to be this much nudity and towards the end, with that one drawn out explicit scene. It became uncomfortable and, again, while I think I understand what Dominik wanted the audience to feel, I didn't think it's necessary.
If nothing else, Ana de Armas should get an Oscar nomination for this role. Her dedication and performance was definitely a breakthrough achievement.
