[Review] Ben Is Back (8/10)

Title - Ben Is Back
Production - Black Bear Pictures, 30WEST
Starring - Julia Roberts, Lucas Hedges, Courtney B. Vance, Kathryn Newton, David Zaldivar, Michael Esper, Rachel Bay Jones
Writer - Peter Hedges
Director - Peter Hedges
Release - 5 December 2018

This was probably the one that couldn't squeeze through into the nomination list just because the other nominated actors inched over Julia Roberts and possibly Lucas Hedges.

There were a few scenes that I thought only Roberts could have delivered that scene that effectively because certain performances were just the choice the actor made.

But credit to Peter Hedges for orchestrating that opening sequence where Hedges' character first returned home, creating a tension so palpable.

The rest of the movie kind of suffered through predictable second and third acts. But Roberts and Hedges performances, plus Kathryn Newton and Courtney B. Vance, all made it watchable and we could feel the stakes. And the only way for the movie to stand out was how it ended, it could have gone the happy or sad route and both would have been effective when done right. And it didn't disappoint.
