I thought Joy Ride would be comedy of the year. It came and went without any long lasting effect. Theater Camp on the other hand, released in the midst of Barbenheimer's historical run, and got swallowed by them.
And as it turned out, Theater Camp is the best comedy of this year.
I was laughing so hard in the first act of the movie, and the charm and stupidity followed through with great pacing until the end; and I have never stopped smiling. If Barbie was the most charming movie of this year, Theater Camp is a good second.
And much of its charm came from the writers, as well as its direction.
My only disappointment was we didn't get to see more stupid shenanigans from Ayo Edebiri's character when she was added into the camp. Her character arc sort of fizzled out in the end.
Alan Kim was a scene stealer in his grown up suit. Some of these kids like Luke Islam really have pipes to sing, and they really got to show off their talents.
And the culmination to the ending was another brilliant piece of writing, performed in a class of his own was Ben Platt. Molly Gordon and the rest of the supporting class also was great. But it's the way Gordon and Lieberman shot each scene that made everyone looked really good.
This movie should not be overlooked come award season for Best Picture!
