This probably will never happen in a million years but Joseph Gordon-Levitt deserves an Oscar nomination for his small role in this film. He gave the role so much more even when we only got to see him from inside a laptop screen. And when he did pop out of the screen, he gave us even more.
Eve Hewson was hilarious in this. She carried the movie well with a lot of charm and humour. And once in a while, I saw some negativity about her in this movie on the internet; and I just don't get it. She was perfect in this role.
While the story's main plot was about Hewson's character's relationship with Gordon-Levitt's, but the one with her son - played by Oren Kinlan - was the one that was her reality and felt more pressing; because it was the one she was trying to escape from.
John Carney put in a song for the kids today in here as well - the one Hewson wrote with Kinlan. And I didn't care for it. All that language the kids today use just cheapened the whole experience of the tone of this movie. But it didn't feel out of place for Hewson's character as she was established to be very in tuned with the modern music as well.
Like most John Carney movies, the ending isn't really the typical endings we are used to. I'm slightly mixed with this one, it felt abrupt; but after it ended it felt apt as well.
But what is still stuck in my head now is the beautiful songs that Gordon-Levitt so expertly sang and hopefully, at least, that song will make it into the Oscar race.
