Alexander Payne - master of telling stories about flawed characters that are trying to hold themselves together. He's back with another great film.
This time, he's working with Paul Giamatti again and these two are magic together. Giamatti once again sank into a character with clear abandonment and he's mesmerizing right from his first frame.
Flanked from supporting efforts from Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa, but it's the relationship building between Sessa and Giamatti that kept us audience glued to the screen. Their character development in and of themselves and also between the pair were a great watch.
We're constantly wondering what will happen next and when will the shit hit the fan - though it never really did. Just a constant string of events after events that saw a few people talking onscreen and yet they were all so great to watch.
Payne's signature fading out and his use of still objects as mood shots filled the transitional frames with poignant beauty. So simple but so effective.
