Alex Garland knows how to create quiet chaos and tension. In this movie, we have no idea what the details of the conflict were; but throughout the movie I was very invested.

I could see, though, why he left out those details. It's a much easier job at the end of the day, as well as it's hard to justify the country of U.S.A. to be torn apart that badly.

Still, I saw it and, in this political climate, the scary thing was that I believed what I saw could happen tomorrow. It wasn't that far fetched. And the actors here led by Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura played it that way.

Dunst's husband Jesse Plemons had a short scene but he struck fear in the audience. And the way he played it, he made it small, not big; but still so terrifying.

Garland's shots of war also looked very intense. The last fifteen minutes was a chaotic siege; and with an A24 budget, this looked really good already.

The only thing that I have to push-back on his direction was the way Dunst's character pushed Cailee Spaeny's character down in that final scene. We've all seen a dive-save. We were expecting it, even. So the way Dunst did it, there should have been another explanation what was going through her head at the time. Otherwise it was a lazy execution to achieve the end-result.
