Yuen Wo Ping is a great action director. But how, even after all these years and worked with so many great ones, is he still so amateurish as a movie director?
Also, this movie was badly edited. Whether there wasn't even B-roll to fill in the transitional gaps properly or just a badly written script, or just lack of competency; there were times when it's hard to follow what's going on. Like the conversation between Jet Li and Wu Jing, they never finished what they were saying.
And how did the villains caught up with the heroes so quickly when they all started out from the same place but at different times? Reminded me of how Rose was able to save Finn at the end of Episode VIII when it was physically imposible unless Rose cut through time and space.
Also, fighting inside a sandstorm? I've never been in a desert but just having sand in my eye from a gust of wind already blinded me.
There was also just not enough back story to properly go into the myriad of characters here and their motivations. It would have been nice to have properly met the children of the five clans. Or what exactly happened with Nicholas Tse's character, or who his companion was.
But Tse's performance was quite decent even though his Mandarin could use a bit more work. And the ladies in this movie were the standouts, particularly Chen Li Jun and Li Yun Xiao. They made their characters better than what the movie provided. And I actually cared about and excited for the showdown between Wu and Tse's characters.
Another disappointing action sequence between two gungfu masters, Li and Wu. With Yuen directing the action, I don't know why he couldn't show off properly the fight choreography; instead there was a lot of unnecessary closeups and shaky camera.
And Yuen has no comedic timing. The humour fell flat throughout.
