Jennifer's Body

Diablo Cody's writing glimmered but didn't shine through. There was a good story lost somewhere between bad acting and bad directing, but the writing just wasn't up to par for something great here. From the first "scary scene", director Karyn Kusama just dived head first right into the scene without any foreplay of horror. Amanda Seyfried's character went home after the ridiculously fast-spreading fire and heard her front door bell rang; and then bam, Kusama made the audience tense with dark lighting and creepy music. There was no reason for the character to be afraid in the first place. The suspense could have been left out until Megan Fox's character crept up. That would have worked better. But both female leads had no good acting, especially Fox who was unconvincing as a nerd's best friend and as a sexy demon. Only Adam Brody who had only a few scenes was interesting and funny, and J.K. Simmons was hilarious with his very few and very short scenes. There were a few lines that made me laugh out loud but overall, the script was no good and the story progression had a lot of continuity issue that was just bizarre; like an abandoned street of houses and walking alone in the dark. That, and a lot of the times, was just asking for trouble. The soundtrack for the movie was one of the few best things the movie had going on. "Through The Trees", though made fun of in the movie, was really a great indie track.Rating: 5 / 10
