The Legend Is Born: Ip Man (8/10)

At last, an Ip Man movie that's worthy of all the great action. I don't know if it's by the same producers but with a new writer, Erica Lee, from a female's point of view there actually is a storyline. The director has changed too but I'm not saying the previous one was bad because Wilson Yip did the best he could with what he had. But with Herman Yau he didn't miss a beat as well. The action sequences were shot beautifully and still as exciting. There's no Donnie Yen but it's okay. The cast made it work and with the choreographers and director, the fight scenes all looked convincing enough. But after two Ip Man movies with the great Donnie Yen, I didn't mind if the action weren't up to par with the previous two. I didn't even notice to be honest. And I welcomed the solid story even though it's nothing original. It was by far the best of the three movies even though I admit the first one was really good as an entertaining piece.Strangely, these days, prequels are the better movies. Even Chinese movies.
