Love In Disguise (4/10)
[caption id="attachment_1983" align="alignleft" width="280" caption="(beyondhollywood.com)"][/caption]A well thought out plot but executed poorly by first-time director and my one and only idol that has survived the harshness of my decreasing taste for Chinese pop, Wang Leehom. As a director directing himself, I thought he did quite well mostly. But strangely enough, when he's acting as a superstar, that's when he's most awkward. I'm very curious why that was so.Not sure how he got Joan Chen in this project, but I didn't think she had a lot to do and did as best as she could with the material she's got. Same went to the other actors like Liu Yifei who I'm sure is a much better actress than she performed here.I didn't like how everyone who had opposed to Wang's character in the movie became his fans too in the end without showing any progression towards the ending. Everything simply came together and was just too idealistic - showing the immaturity of Wang's writing. But the concept of a musical soulmate surrounding the story was interesting and a good idea created by Wang as his debut as a writer and director. Some of the materials he used were issues from his real life encounters and he turned them into jokes, which I thought was brilliantly done. But will this be the start of more directorial movies to come? That's the question.I see the sort of exaggerated comedic direction Wang was going with this, but a lot of times he's just not hitting the bulls-eye, just the yellow circle around it.
