Devil (7/10)
[caption id="attachment_2038" align="alignleft" width="214" caption="(imdb.com)"][/caption]I'm not a big fan of the pure horror genre, usually because of the illogical scares thrown at the audience's face. But Devil had little of that. Most of the scares were justified and explainable, which is how I like my horror flicks - because I'm no where near cardiac arrest and do not need sudden jolts to my heart. However, there were still a few issues not properly explained and left to the audience's interpretation. Like the first person who died in the opening scene, was that suicide or not? If it was, like the opening monologue suggested, it opened up a path for the Devil to come. Then how did those particular few ended up in the lift? Sure we found out later on why they were there, but what about the technician and the guard who got electrocuted? Were they chosen as well? Or just what I like to call, "lazy writing"?The worst one was when one of them got bitten, but there's no real explanation for that. It was just to throw off the audience. Some lines reminded me of M. Night Shyamlan's bad days, but the script belonged to Brian Nelson. John Erick Dowdle directed this well enough, though he may have dragged some scenes longer than he should have. It took forever for someone to go down the elevator shaft.Nevertheless, a well thought-out story and executed quite well. It kept me interested right until the end. The unknown actors all did brilliantly that kept me guessing right until the end.
