*** I've decided to write a spoiler-filled review so read only if you have watched or decided not to watch it.
This really felt like The Bourne Identity gone very wrong.
Of course we wouldn't get to know that until three-quarters in when it was finally revealed that this was another spy / hit-man movie. Problem was, the movie made that the twist in the end. And while The Bourne Identity was such a well established movie that will forever be etched in our minds, nothing could have gone right for this movie.
Liam Neeson of course played the main character suffering from amnesia after an accident and forgotten that he was on a mission. But unlike Jason Bourne, Neeson's character even forgotten his reflex action - meaning he couldn't stop a punch going right for his face. And when he found out who he really was, he tried to stop the assasination attempt made by the rest of his team members. Sure, this would have been fine if he never recovered his memory and wanted to be a "good guy". But he did recover his memory towards the end. So when everything came flooding back in and he "remembered" how to fight, he went on to kill his colleague without a second thought. If he had remembered everything, wouldn't the emotional history with his team came back as well? Wouldn't he remember his mission and carry on? But he showed no hesitation whatsoever.
Nothing made sense. And a lot of things happened in public but it's as if Berlin had no police. There were just too many loopholes.
Frank Langella was a waste of talent. But January Jones was a waste of capital investment. Her acting was horrible. I first saw her when she hosted Saturday Night Live. There, I already had doubts but maybe it was just nerves. Here, it's confirmed. She could be worse than Jessica Alba. Hearless spy-killer doesn't mean stone-faced and emotionless. Her worst scene was when she was checking into the hotel. She looked like a newbie.
So even though the direction was very good, Neeson and Diane Kruger were great, the story had potential too; but the important bits were the ones that didn't make sense. And that lost all entertainment value for me.
