The Lost Bladesman (7/10)

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Anything martial arts movie by Donnie Yen will not disappoint.

The fight scenes were once again mesmerizing. Yen again looked intimidating, wielding whatever weapon of choice. The way he held it, swung it, struck it; it's a joy just to see him do it.

But what's even better with this movie, it was the performance of Jiang Wen as Cao Cao. He was cunning and sly, but always charismatic with a magnetic screen presence. His chemistry with Yen made this movie. Every time they were not onscreen together, it made the next scene that brought them together so much better, even when they were just discussing a topic that I always consider boring - politics.

Of course, inevitably, some lines came from the cheese factory, and some scenes as well like one that showed someone committing suicide with a ridiculous pose. But the good definitely outweighed the bad and it was really a more enjoyable experience than expected. The creative duo of Alan Mak and Felix Chong have done it again.
