The Town (7/10)

I'm very disappointed that this didn't come to our local cinemas. Watching this in less than fantastic quality probably affected the overall impact for me because I'm surprised at myself for giving this below an 8.

Ben Affleck probably redeemed himself completely as an actor with this movie. Not only was he the lead, but he also directed. Though it was no Gone Baby Gone, but he again lived up to the standards he set himself.

Affleck also co-wrote the screenplay and told a very real and engaging story. What he did brilliantly as a director here was to capture and provide the essence and mood of a place, and in this case, Boston.

The movie revolved mainly around two things, heists and relationships. The relationship between Affleck's character and his childhood friend portrayed by Jeremy Renner, and the relationship with Rebecca Hall's character whom posed a real threat to his operation. And the way Affleck shot the story, you really felt for him as he got torn apart while trying to protect both.

For me, there wasn't anything new in terms of the storyline. I could already guessed how the movie was going to end in the middle of it, even though I hoped that it would be different, but alas it wasn't.

Nevertheless, the cast delivered with great performances and chemistry under great direction. I only know John Hamm as a funny guy from what little I've seen him so I thought his performance here was absolutely compelling. And even Blake Lively gave me a surprise and showed great range in her acting ability. From Green Lantern and now The Town, she has continued to surprise me even though I do not appreciate her work in Gossip Girl.
