At first when the aliens appeared, I thought it was a really low budget film (and maybe it was) as we could only see the blue fangs. But it was very clever of writer-director Joe Cornish to make the aliens all and totally black. It gave these aliens a fresh new look (though I could have sworn it has happened before somewhere in the comic-dom) and made it mysterious. Also, I'm sure it saved some budgeting on the CGI.
However, the inexperienced direction of Cornish really showed, and somewhat painfully too as he relied on too much editing to balance out the lack of CGI competencies. Plus the overall direction was lacking in a lot of scenes and looked amateurish. But I thought the actors who were mostly newcomers all performed as best as they could under the circumstances and told their parts well.
Cornish's skill lies in his writing and I thought that was the part that shown through. The story although had loopholes (like every scene with weed owner that had continuity issues), but cleaned up nicely in the end as everything was sort of explained. And had the protagonist owned up to his actions and took up the responsibility like a man. Another concept of from zero to hero.
