Then again, if Hanks had directed another couple doing this, it may not have worked as well. Reason was because, hey, it's Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts!
What's good about it, the writing and directing by Hanks. For something this generic, Hanks gave both lead characters personal issues they had to overcome. Their own demons made the characters felt more realistic; something the audience could relate to. And Hanks direction kept things alive, I don't remember any dull moment even in this slow-paced, low-keyed setting of a comedy-drama.
And here's a big plus for this movie when compared to Transformers 3. The other cast members other than Gugu Mbatha-Raw who had a slightly meatier role; those with smaller roles like Cedric The Entertainer, Taranji P. Henson, Wilmer Valderrama, Bryan Cranston and George Takei all played characters that didn't feel like they belonged. Unlike many of the big names in Transformers 3 that were not properly written in and in the end looked more like caricatures.
So while this wasn't overly funny or overly dramatic, it was still quite an enjoyable watch with good performances from all the cast.
