[Review] Captain America: The First Avenger (7/10)

I was hoping this final comic-book-adaptation entry will be the best of the summer flicks, but it wasn't. Well, at least the producers found a way for it to work on the silver screen, slapping the American flag onto body tights and all.

The CGI astounded me once again, having Chris Evans's face on a twelve year old body. It didn't look fake for a second. But the costume, I have to say, it worked brilliantly. From Steve Rogers's first "acting" gig to the army helmet, then later evolving with Stark technology. Brilliant. Even that shield looked amazing, coupled with the sound effects for it.

The only thing that could have improved on was the skull for the Red Skull played by the ever brilliant Hugo Weaving. It could have looked scarier and more real, but it wasn't.

Casting of Toby Jones as Arnim Zola was brilliant. Casting of Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes was not. Casting of Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark was good, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter was adequate, but the addition of Tommy Lee Jones and Stanley Tucci, especially Tucci, was excellent.

The action, however, was not good enough, or just not enough. The shield throwing could have had more inventive takes just to make it look more special with more special effects. I don't believe I've ever saw it bounce off more than two targets in a single throw. And because Cap doesn't have any special powers (and his weapon of choice was a shield), not much could be done there without being inventive.

Plus the pacing for the whole movie was just a little too slow. Having said that, it was still a very good origin story that had a proper beginning that stayed true to the comic roots.

But just for the character of Captain America itself and what he stood for, I thought it was so well done that I want to feel proud for those colours of red, white and blue.

And don't forget to stay till the end of the credits for a sneak peek at The Avengers.
