But unfortunately, it wasn't really. The introduction was too short. It was where they had to introduce the Smurfs and yet they only spent like 10 minutes. Immediately chaos ensued and we get thrown into the "real" world. This, I gathered, was because they didn't have enough budget to spend on creating that magical world of Smurfs. So the story had to be fast forwarded to where minimal CGI was needed.
But I guess true to the original cartoon, nothing makes sense except when Neil Patrick Harris asked questions about how senseless everything was. And one after another unfortunate event kept happening that didn't make sense but had to happen just to move the story along. Understandably, the target audience was more for the family with young kids and I'm not saying the movie was horribly wrong. But for me, it was just barely entertaining. The illogical side of things made the entertainment value diminished greatly.
The only good thing about the movie was Hank Azaria's portrayal of Gargamel. He boosted the fun factor up and was really fun to watch. And the magnificent Harris anchoring the movie down. Because for all the Smurfs and for all the CGI involved, even when they were speaking they still didn't come across realistic enough. Having Katy Perry voiced Smurfette perhaps wasn't the best idea as she had plenty of screen time. But Anton Yelchin playing Clumsy who was sort of the main Smurf character was adequate.
