The Three Musketeers (5/10)

As I watched this remake of The Three Musketeers I couldn't help but kept recalling the 1993 version with Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Oliver Platt, Chris O'Donnell and Tim Curry. Now that was a whole lot of fun. (But I could be getting old and losing my memory.)

And the reason why I kept recalling as I watched? Because this one wasn't fun.

The characters were weak and uncharismatic. The lines were useless and trite. The acting could have been better with better lines. And the events were just unfolding without any excitment and thrill.

It probaby was no fault of the actors. I thought Luke Evans made a good Aramis. Ray Stevenson gave the expected flair and sense of humour of Porthos. Logan Lerman perhaps had the best portrayal here as D'Artagnan with some amount of charm. Milla Jovovich did enough as the sly de Winter.

But as for Athos, I wanted someone that's more charismatic, cool and composed. Matthew Macfadyen did not deliver on that front. As for Orlando Bloom's Duke of Buckingham, something was off and I couldn't pinpoint what exactly. His character was there, perhaps just not over-the-top enough.

Other than the main cast, James Corden was good but the script didn't do him justice as his character was completely lost in the crowd. So was his humour. Juno Temple wasn't interesting. And D'Artagnan's love interest by Gabriella Wilde was quite horrible and stiff.

But the biggest crime of all was Christoph Waltz not being able to shine. His portrayal in Inglourious Basterds set too high a standard for himself. But for me, he still stole the limelight each time he came onscreen.

There were a lot of explosions and big budget scenes but I just felt hollow inside while watching. The story didn't move me at all and I wasn't able to connect with each of the characters.
