Ryan Gosling made this movie as good as it was. Before this I didn't really get his acting but with this, it was difficult for me to tear my eyes away from him.

He brought a lot of charisma, but also a lot of intimidation and a lot of subtleties. Above all, he brought this particular character to life; and it's not a character that ws easy to like. But towards the end in that creative shot by director Nicolas Winding Refn, I was silently rooting for him.

I didn't quite get Refn's way of directing in some parts though, especially in the dialogue when there were too much silence in between the words. The quiet nuances I found was a little distracting and confusing in the storytelling. It may be an acquired taste with this director but I did notice he also like to use a lot of close-ups; kind of remind me of M. Night Shyamalan but he didn't get any love from the critics.

Another thing I didn't get was how the movie went once the blood and gore started. I truly enjoyed what the movie was about until then because some of the gore was quite unnecessary.

But the rest of the cast did well under those circumstances as well; Bryan Cranston, Carey Mulligan and Albert Brooks filled up the spaces very nicely. But Ron Perlman and Christina Hendricks didn't quite do it for me as well as the others did.

And as much as what artistry the director brought, that kiss in the lift was quite out of synch with that scene. I didn't quite get that. And also the pink fonts, was that meant to be ironic?
